Semillas del Futuro

Semillas del Futuro

Semillas del Futuro is an after school program for teens that builds youth leadership while focusing on entrepreneurship, technology, arts, gardening, and Puerto Rican culture.

This year, we are diving into the world of entrepreneurship through our youth-run farm stand. This public farm stand is an opportunity to sell culturally important foods like gandules, cassava, and ají dulce to the neighborhood. Semillas youth will learn the basics of entrepreneurship and how to turn creative ideas into marketable art and food based products that are ready to be sold at our farm stand.

Youth will spend time building their outdoor classroom (The Butterfly Garden), making art, learning how to create their own business, and gaining perspective on why our gardens are so important, all while celebrating the Puerto Rican culture and history rooted in Kensington.

Weekly Activities:

  • Monday- BBB (Butterflies, Budgets, & Bees)

On Mondays we will be working to build an outdoor classroom space in our Butterfly Garden. Even more, they’ll learn about pollinators, examine bee boxes, and learn all about budgets, investing, and how to manage money.

  • Tuesday- Why Are We Here?

On Tuesdays, we will be answering the question, why are we here?, by examining the history of NSNP, our gardens, and the neighborhood. Youth will get to know members of the NSNP community, build an extended community, and gain perspectives on their place in their community.

  • Wednesday- Food + Garden

Wednesdays are for garden adventures, trying new foods, and developing food-based products to sell at the farm stand for the community. We’ll work with Raíces Garden Apprentices in the garden, bring food from the garden into the kitchen, and build our understanding of Puerto Rican and Caribbean produce, foods, and recipes.

  •

    Thursday- Entrepreneurship 101

We dive deeper into entrepreneurship on Thursdays. Youth will explore their creative minds and be guided on how to develop those creative ideas into marketable products that are ready to be sold at our farm stand.

  • Friday- Arts + CultureFridays are for the arts! On Friday we’ll spend time exploring arts, crafts, and Puerto Rican culture to help us hone our skills and develop our potential product list. We will take field trips, meet local artists, and create projects of our own!
